Tony Daunt
Auckland-based singer-songwriter Tony Daunt has carved a niche in alt‑country and dark folk. After decades playing bass and fronts like Swampland, he launched Tony Daunt & The Dauntless in 2016 — spotlighting his raw songwriting and gravel‐worn voice on debut Gypsy and follow‑up Unlovable Man

Some scars don't fade. Some songs don't flinch.
Tony Daunt is a seasoned Kiwi musician whose journey spans over 30 years and multiple musical incarnations . A life-long player of bass in outfits like Bernie Griffen & The Grifters, The Blue Roses, and the psycho‑billy act Swampland, he stepped into the spotlight in 2016 with his own project, Tony Daunt & The Dauntless.
Inspired by punk, country, and swamp roots from Brisbane days, Daunt’s songwriting is deeply personal: overcoming addiction, confronting depression, and finding redemption through music. His debut album Gypsy presents a haunting mix of dark alt‑country, cinematic pedal steel, and emotionally raw confidences. Critics noted its “darkly‑toned country songs” and heartfelt bluntness.
More recently, he unveiled Unlovable Man (2023), a collection that explores grief, resilience, and defiance, with moments of relentless drive and intimacy. Daunt continues writing and recording, fueled by honesty and a fierce desire to connect.

Tony Daunt & The Dauntless
Formed in 2016, Tony Daunt & The Dauntless bring together seasoned musicians from Auckland’s alt‑country scene, blending dark storytelling, guiltar textures, double bass grooves, and gritty vocals. Their albums Gypsy and Unlovable Man showcase whole-souled songwriting and a deep, emotionally charged sound.
Band biography
Tony Daunt & The Dauntless emerged from Daunt’s desire to explore darker, melodic, and introspective songwriting beyond his previous punk and rock’n’roll bands. Formed in Auckland in 2016, the group includes longtime collaborators from the local scene.
Their debut album, Gypsy, collected songs written over two decades, steeped in reflective moods and cinematic textures. Critics praised its poignant ambience and dark tone, noting it as “darkly‑toned country songs” with haunting pedal steel under a raw vocal delivery . Muzic.NZ described the band’s sound as a “darker, stark edge” that felt timeless.
Following their debut, the 2023 album Unlovable Man continued to deepen their sound—fusing introspective ballads with uptempo, energetic tracks, all underpinned by Tony’s confessional lyricism and the band’s cinematic dynamic.
Live, the band has earned acclaim for polished yet emotionally raw performances — balancing moody ballads with driving rock moments at events like The Hellbilly Hop and Auckland’s Music in Parks.
The Dauntless has always been less of a fixed lineup and more of a living, evolving collective — forming around the kind of music that needs to be expressed. Each iteration of the band brings together musicians whose instincts and energy suit the emotional weight and tone of the songs. Whether the moment calls for brooding restraint, melodic force, or raw vulnerability, the lineup shifts to meet the sound. It’s a fluid, responsive approach that keeps the music honest — shaped by the stories being told, not just the instruments at hand.
